Managing Generations Effectively Using the MBTI® Tool Meeting No: 67720

Overview

Four generations in the workforce—with lots of reasons for misunderstanding and frustration!  Traditionalists (in their 60s), Baby Boomers (from their mid-40s–60), Generation X (from their late 20s–early 40s), and the latest—the Millennial generation:  While there is great variety within each of these groups, the formative events of childhoods, adolescence impacted their expectations and values related to work.

Managers are mostly from the traditionalist and baby boomer generation.  They’re trying to supervise Generation X and the Millennial generation with methods that have worked in the past – and it’s not working very well.  Boomers privately refer to Gen Xers as “slackers” and cynics, with little if any loyalty to their employers.  Millennials are seen as self-centered, egotistical, not willing to pay their dues and needing hand-holding.

And the younger generations see their older managers as foolishly slaving, working long hours for little appreciation, controlling, and “beyond it.”  As one said, “What is it about you people and 7:30 a.m.?”

It’s like putting together a team with members from different cultures:  the key is to understand underlying values and norms driving the different behaviors, learn to appreciate the differences and the possible contributions, and identify more effective ways to manage the generation mix.

AMA’s workshop, Managing Generations Effectively Using the MBTI® Tool, utilizes the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the world’s most widely used personality assessment to bridge the generation gap in the workplace.
