Managing the Multicultural Workforce Using the MBTI® ToolMeeting No: 67722
Overview
Globalization and changing workforce demographics within the U.S. mean that managers must learn to deal effectively with multinational, cross-cultural and ethnically diverse colleagues and employees. The very skills and tools that managers have successfully used in the past often don’t work as effectively when interacting with people from different cultures. A survey of Fortune 500 companies identified having culturally competent leaders as the most important factor for business success. The same survey indicated that these companies overwhelmingly recognize the need for their leaders to develop additional knowledge and skills to be effective.
Although doing business globally seems to be a no-brainer, it’s easier said than done. The very characteristics American managers pride themselves on: being direct, frank, in-your-face, accountable, are almost unique in the world. And, we might add, a source of much misunderstanding and friction.
Applying knowledge from MBTI® type can help managers identify differences and modify their style to be more effective. Type identifies inborn personality patterns that cross cultures. Cultural norms affect the ways type preferences are expressed. Putting the two together provides a powerful perspective and effective, practical tools for developing cultural competence.
This workshop will draw on the MBTI® tool and models of culture to increase managers’ knowledge and effectiveness in the new global environment by:
- Defining the components of culture
- Analyzing the impacts of type and culture on work values and work styles
- Giving specific tips and direction for managing employees from various cultures
